Abstract: AT&T, a 125-year-old company that pioneered telecommunications in the US, suddenly seems to have moved away from its core business.

After its exit from wireless business in the US in 2004, the introduction of VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) coupled with the deregulation of the US telecom industry is threatening to reduce the company's revenues from long distance calls by 20% per year.

Pedagogical Objectives:

  • To discuss the troubles faced by AT&T in a matured industry that is witnessing reduced price margins, increased competition and ever-changing technologies.
